What a Supersedeas Bond Does

T. Maxwell Smith· March 26, 2026· 1 min read

Losing a money judgment does not mean the winner can empty your accounts tomorrow. A supersedeas bond buys time to appeal.

When you appeal a money judgment, the winner can normally try to collect immediately. A supersedeas bond suspends that, protecting both sides during the appeal.

If you win the appeal, the bond comes back. We have recovered a supersedeas bond for a client after defeating the underlying judgment on appeal.
